“ I am not a violin maker who makes the odd viola, I am a viola maker who occasionally makes a violin.”
The concept of this design is to produce a cohesive group of violas. This scaled set has been developed as a response to the demands of today’s professional player, and offers a choice of both size and tonal colour.
Whilst the aim is to maintain the continuity of form found in the traditional violin family group, these instruments are individually built to achieve a responsive instrument that is both acoustically and aesthetically rewarding.

These sizes are representative of the scale encompassed by the set, indeed ANY incremental size is available Such is the flexibility of this design!
A scaled set of violas made to an individual design....
British Luthier and Specialist Viola Maker, David Milward has been working exclusively with the viola form for more than 25 years, and is one of the leading viola makers working today. A highly original personal viola pattern, which combined with an individual working style, has created a very successful interpretation of the modern viola.

My first quartet of instruments, all made to the same design developed for the violas. The cello dimensions readily transferred up to cello proportions with normal proportional adjustments for ff holes etc. Working at the larger cello size also solved many of the problems of reducing the pattern to violin size, so I’m very pleased with the result!
